Description

Glassy Carbon Electrode — Straight/L‑Type Overview
Glassy Carbon Electrode — Details

Material & Application System

Name: Straight / L‑Type Glassy Carbon Electrode
Materials: Imported Glassy‑Carbon Core / PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) Body
Experimental System: Working Electrode / Reference Electrode / Counter Electrode

  • High purity, long service life
  • Available types: straight‑through and L‑type
  • Typical applications: voltammetry, electroanalysis, electrocatalysis research

Structure & Components

Modular assembly for easy maintenance and replacement.

  • Glassy‑carbon electrode (core)
  • Binding post / terminal
  • PTFE rod / holder
  • Glassy‑carbon core (various diameters)
  • Sealing O‑ring (optional, depending on configuration)

PTFE Characteristics

  • Soft mechanical behavior with very low surface energy
  • High‑temperature resistance (continuous 200–260 °C)
  • Remains flexible at −100 °C
  • Outstanding chemical resistance (aqua regia and all organic solvents)
  • Excellent weatherability and long aging lifespan
  • Very low friction coefficient (~0.04), non‑stick surface
  • Non‑toxic, physiologically inert
  • Excellent electrical insulation — ideal Class‑C insulating material

Glassy‑Carbon Electrode Characteristics

  • Excellent electrical properties and high chemical stability
  • Low thermal expansion, high hardness, and high gas‑tightness
  • Wide potential window (~ −1 to +1 V vs. SCE, typical)
  • Supports multiple geometries (cylinder, disk); compatible with Hg‑film and chemically modified electrodes as substrates

Care & Use Instructions

Keep the glassy‑carbon surface mirror‑smooth and clean. Contamination by organics or metal compounds can affect measurements (e.g., missing peaks, stray peaks, poor repeatability). Clean before use by one of the following:

  • Nitric acid soak & wipe
  • Soak/wipe in 1:1 mixtures such as ammonia + absolute ethanol, or ethyl acetate
  • Electrochemical cleaning: after alcohol wipe, soak in 6 N HCl or 4 N HNO₃, then polarize repeatedly within about ±0.8 V (e.g., −1.8 V to positive range in 0.5 M KCl, pH 7, O₂‑removed conditions)
  • Mechanical repolishing for severe contamination/pitting/scratches: polish with >200‑mesh MgO on damp felt
